SELF-ACTUALIZATION, NOT SELF-REPLACEMENT

ENRICHMENT, NOT JUST EFFICIENCY

FIRST ASK HOW YOU WANT HUMANS TO ADVANCE, THEN ASK HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN SUPPORT THAT

I have a 3E philosophy that has led me to be the thinker, tinkerer and creator I am today, and led me to stand for the three goals listed above. This philosophy is the scaffolding that supports everything that has ever really mattered across my life:

  • EXPERIENCE. Mine is as an early-stage exec and advisor. I've co-founded companies, raised capital, achieved scale, and exited. Grown and retained teams. Led initiatives to launch (or to #fastfail, the next best outcome).

  • EXPERTISE in content, community, communications, and company culture. And in resource allocation, running P&Ls, and reaching goals at scale.

  • EMPATHY as operating principle, not soft skill. Having sat on both sides of the table — founder and evaluator — I know that most answers are already inside us. I also know that putting yourself in the shoes of whomever's on the other side of the table can only improve how your ideas land.

My through line, across twenty years and many careers, is showing how new tools and technology can expand what you’re capable of.

My STory

My through-line, across twenty years and many careers, is showing people how new tools and technology can expand what they're capable of.

I started as a theater kid, accidentally spent seven years in finance, then talked my way into Silicon Valley product management during the dot-com boom — the era when people hired for smarts and ambition and taught the rest.

In 2003, I became one of the earliest practitioners helping organizations decode what the social web meant for them and their businesses, and in 2005 I co-founded BlogHer with Lisa Stone and Jory Des Jardins. BlogHer ushered in the Creator Economy for countless women. BlogHer was bootstrapped for two years before raising four funds of VC funding, scaled to roughly $30M in annual revenue and events with 5,000 attendees before being acquired in 2014.

I went on to serve as Chief Community Officer of SHE Media, co-author Road Map for Revolutionaries: Resistance, Activism, and Advocacy for All (Ten Speed Press, 2018), take C-Level roles in early stage start-ups, and co-found a passion project called Optionality. Along the way, I have shared hard-won insights into building community, surviving entrepreneurism, mastering social technologies, and operationalizing values into culture at venues from the Commonwealth Club to TEDx to the 92nd Street Y. And at companies like Google, LinkedIn, GoDaddy, and Coca-Cola.

Today I vibe-product-manage my own AI-powered tools into existence — I build daily, because the best way to learn a new technology has always been to use it yourself — and teach others to do the same.

My thesis: AI's real value is self-actualization, not self-replacement; enrichment, not efficiency. Defining how we facilitate human growth should come before dictating AI augmentation.

Everything about my journey to this point has proved to me that I can learn, at any age or career stage, and so can you. (In fact, here’s a tip: You're much more likely to figure out you don't like doing something, than to discover you're incapable of learning it.)

They might be non-traditional labels, and don’t reflect a job title, but I’m proudly a Thinker, Tinkerer, and Creator, and I’m happy to share the fruits of those labors with you here.
